One Founding Moment

In 2006, our founder was a 21-year-old college student at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. She had plans to become a classroom teacher. But things changed when she learned that 50% of cats and dogs who entered shelters were losing their lives. That same year, Amanda Reitz set out to save them, one by one. This young lady had visions of a refuge that could offer a safe and loving home to animals in need. That dream became a reality when she found Walter, Happily Ever After’s first rescue dog. He was wandering the woods of Northern Wisconsin. Amanda and her parents, Ken and Lois Reitz, brought Walter home and founded HEA in the family’s garage in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin. The Reitz family committed to making the welfare of companion animals their life’s work. Together, they set out on a journey to create positive and lasting change in companion animal welfare.

Our Intention

True to our founding intentions, HEA intends to continue creating positive disruption within the companion animal welfare industry. This requires an entrepreneurial spirit, a focus on strategic innovation, an orientation towards root-cause solutions and continuous improvement, and a skillful approach to building authentic community relationships.

Our Impact

Our impact is the measurable outcome of our crystal-clear vision, mission, and values - and we love to measure it! To give you an idea of scale, in just the last 3 years, HEA's community of supporters has:

  • Paired more than 2,100 companion animals with loving families.
  • Spayed/neutered more than 4,700 cats and dogs.
  • Fostered more than 1,500 dogs and cats in their own homes.
  • Shared more than 75,000 hours of volunteerism.

In short, we work our "tails off" on behalf of companion animals!

Our Vision

A world where the life of every companion animal matters...Every.Single.One.

Our Mission

To increase humanity's capacity to care for its companion animals.

Our Work

These 5 pillars guide the success of our mission.

  • Adoption
  • Education
  • Spay/Neuter
  • Rehabilitation
  • Sanctuary (Lifetime Care)

Our Values

At Happily Ever After, we have an unrelenting passion to make every life matter. That's why we live by these four core values.

When we seek to understand and connect, we truly listen and engage others. There is always something we can learn and discover to form a caring connection. While it may be difficult for others to see beyond the current situation, we help them to see what could be. We dream big! We raise the bar and are always looking at how we can grow to achieve more. Each of us has further potential and will improve to be better tomorrow than we are today. We will be open to feedback as we continue to learn and grow from our mistakes and our successes. We have high expectations for ourselves and each other; because to do otherwise would indicate a lack of dedication to our cause and one another’s success.

Why do we do it? Because we get to change lives, every day.
