Giving Senior Dogs the Second Chances They Deserve

Every dog deserves a second chance. But for senior dogs, that chance is far less likely to come.

In traditional shelters, older dogs are often overlooked. While puppies and younger dogs are adopted quickly, senior dogs can wait months—or never make it out at all. Not because they aren’t wonderful companions, but simply because of their age.

And that’s what makes the work of Young at Heart Senior Pet Adoptions so important.

Young at Heart is dedicated entirely to senior pets—giving them the care, dignity, and love they deserve in their golden years. Their adoption center isn’t a typical shelter. It’s designed to feel like a home, complete with cozy living spaces, heated floors for aging joints, and access to outdoor yards where dogs can relax or play at their own pace.

From the moment a senior pet arrives, they receive comprehensive medical care, including diagnostics, dental work, and ongoing treatment through an on-site veterinary suite. This allows Young at Heart to respond quickly to their needs while making every donated dollar go further.

But what truly makes them special is their commitment:
They don’t give up on these dogs.

Many of the pets they take in have nowhere else to go—older, often with medical needs, and overlooked by traditional adoption systems. Yet these are the dogs who are already house-trained, calmer, and deeply loyal. They have spent years perfecting the simple, beautiful act of loving a human.

They just need someone willing to love them back.

This year marks my fourth year participating in the Shelter Slumber Pawty in support of Young at Heart.

Each year, I choose to spend a night at the shelter—not because it’s easy, but because it’s important. Young at Heart’s unwavering commitment to senior dogs is what inspires me to show up, fundraise, and be part of this mission year after year.

While I’ll be spending one weekend at the shelter, the dogs we’re helping are waiting every day for comfort, care, and a place to call home.
