In Marlboro County, there’s a place that is near and dear to my heart, the Humane Society of Marlboro County. It’s not just a shelter. It’s a place where animals who have been hurt, abandoned, or forgotten are finally given love, care, and a real chance at a new life.

Every year, they take in over 1,600 animals—and they never turn any away. That alone speaks to the heart of who they are. But to keep their no-kill mission alive, they depend on something incredibly important: transporting animals to trusted rescue partners who can help them find forever homes. These “freedom rides” truly save lives.

Right now, they are working to pay off the transport van that makes those journeys possible, along with covering ongoing costs like fuel and maintenance. Without this, many animals wouldn’t get the second chance they deserve.

That’s why the Shelter Slumber Pawty is so special to me. For 24 hours, we step into the world of these animals—spending time, sharing space, and even sleeping in the kennels with them. It’s a powerful way to connect, to understand, and to show these animals they are not alone.

Last year, this event raised over $20,000, and we’re hoping to do it again—or even more this year.
