What happens when someone stays long enough to truly witness shelter life?
On April 18, people across the United States will spend 24 hours inside animal shelters—not as visitors, but as advocates—participating in the Shelter Slumber Pawty, a nationwide event dedicated to raising awareness and funds for homeless pets. This will be my third year participating in Brazoria County SPCA Slumber Pawty and it continues to be one of the most heartfelt experiences I participate in annually. During this time, I will be sharing my experience and shedding light on the daily realities these animals face while they wait—often far too long—for a loving home.
I believe it is important to be transparent about what shelter life is really like. My hope is to bring greater awareness to our community and show just how much your generosity can impact the life of an animal who has been surrendered and left to “live” in a shelter.
Over the past three years, I have become deeply involved with the SPCA—serving on the Board of Directors and volunteering in the shelter almost daily. It is heartbreaking to see so many beautiful dogs and cats discarded as if they don’t matter. Many are surrendered simply because their owners were not prepared for the lifelong commitment of having a pet.
These animals don’t understand why they’ve been abandoned. They are suddenly placed into a loud, unfamiliar, and stressful environment. Some become so depressed that they stop eating or interacting altogether.
We must do better.
Education is key. Spaying and neutering pets should be a top priority—if done consistently, it would drastically reduce the number of animals entering shelters across the country.
I am asking for your support. Your donation will help give a voice to these animals who cannot speak for themselves.
I love spending time with them—walking them, caring for them, simply being present. When I come in, you can see the hope in their eyes. Even a few minutes of love means everything to them. They are longing for connection, compassion, and a second chance.
Please consider supporting my efforts as I work to make a difference here in Brazoria County.
Thank you, and God bless.
