If you looked at my Pinterest boards 10 years ago, you’d never guess I’d end up rescuing a pit mix. But in the summer of 2022, everything changed. I was fresh out of college, getting over a bad relationship, and searching for something meaningful to fill my time. I’d always loved dogs, so I started volunteering at my local animal shelter. That’s where I discovered “day trips”- short outings where volunteers take shelter dogs out for a few hours. It gives them a break from the noise and stress, and helps us learn about their personalities so they have a better shot at adoption. I was hooked from the first trip. Taking dogs out every weekend I could, enjoying my time with them, and helping them find their forever.

When November rolled around, I took a break because of the cold. Then one day, I was scrolling Facebook and saw a post from the shelter walk group. Astrid. She had the most mesmerizing eyes and the most unique coat, and something about her just pulled me in. A few days later, I took her out for a day trip - and I instantly knew. She curled up in my lap like she’d known me forever. I Facetimed my family and said I may or may not do something really impulsive…

Two days later, I adopted her.

Astrid, now Margot, has truly changed my life in every aspect. She’s taught me about patience, resilience, and unconditional love. She reminds me to slow down, to play more, and to see the good even on hardest days. I never thought I’d be a rescue dog person - but now I can’t imagine life without her.

Here’s to Margot, the best rescue dog in the world. The sole reason behind every single decision I make. And the exact reason I will be spending the night inside the shelter to help bring awareness to dogs waiting for their forever.
