The Bitter Root Humane Association (BRHA) was formed in 1972 by a group of local animal lovers. Over the years, BRHA has continued to grow both in terms of space but also in terms of animal enrichment and services provided to the community.
In 2025 BRHA helped 1,100+ find loving homes or were reunited with their families. BRHA also provided support for members of the community. BRHA provided free microchipping and vaccines that were funded through grants. BRHA distributed over 45,000 of pet food to local families to ensure no pets went hungry due to financial hardships. An in-house low cost spay neuter clinic was implemented and 182 animals received the services of the clinic.
BRHA provides through innovative programs that have received significant recognition and led BRHA to become a national leader in animal welfare. While the recognition is wonderful what truly matters is that the animals within the care of BRHA receive enrichment through programs where they can leave the shelter for an adventure day... hiking, cuddles while watching movies, car rides and the list goes on and on. After receiving training from Dogs Playing for Life staff and volunteers are able to facilitate play groups. Dogs get to play with their friends under supervision and have the best time. Tales for Tails, a youth reading program, allows for kids to come and read to the animals. It helps calm the dogs, provides socialization for the cats and teach our youth about advocacy.
Everyone at BRHA (staff, volunteers, board, committees) is very excited about what is to come in 2026. Growing our current programs, further partnering with shelters that through organizations animals are transported from high kill shelters, saving their lives, making improvements to the existing facility, helping our community with much needed resources. For being able to say that animals under our care can remain at BRHA until their forever family finds them. That euthanasia will never occur for time or space.
There is so much goodness that occurs at BRHA every day. However, there is the reality that BRHA receives no funding from the county. They are completely funded through private donations and grants. It costs close to $2,000 a day to keep the doors open.
Please consider making a donation to our small but mighty shelter. It is greatly appreciated.
