I've always been an "animal person" and have known since I was a wee lass that animal welfare would be my trajectory. Being involved with the Whatcom Humane Society for the past 9(!!) years (my anniversary is coming up real quick here on April 26!) has simultaneously been the most incredible and most challenging time of my entire life. Each and every day we (my coworkers as well as the giant army of selfless volunteers who donate a truly *stunning* amount of their time) snip/snap between the most heartwarming and heart-wrenching experiences imaginable, but at the end of the day we all hit the pillow knowing we made a difference and that our work is important, and we'll damn sure show up the next day and do it all over again. And the (un)fortunate reality is that none of us will ever be out of a job-- our work here is needed, and while it is tough, tough sh*t sometimes, I feel fortunate and full of gratitude that I get to spend my days not only helping animals, but helping people as well. From food bank services, to low-cost spay/neuter, to reuniting people with their lost pets, to providing peaceful end-of-life services for people and their beloved four-legged family members, to matchmaking someone with their new best friend, to being the very last resort for those who often travel thousands of miles across state lines to surrender their animal after everywhere else said no-- Whatcom Humane Society is here, has always been here (since 1902, baby!) and will, hopefully, always continue to be here.
