As many of you know, I’ve spent a lot of time around HAWS, not just as a supporter, but as a board member. I’ve seen firsthand what it takes to care for animals that come in after being dealt a bad hand.
Besides being a board member, we've been involved with HAWS since Mia was 6 years old. We’ve been had some incredible animals come through HAWS and into our lives. Herbert and Ducky (rest their souls), TeaBee, Stella, Penny, a handful of guinea pigs, and probably a few I’m forgetting. Each one started there and became a big part of our family or extended family. Same goes for a lot of friends and neighbors.
HAWS isn’t just a temporary stop, but a second chance. These animals are getting real medical care, behavioral support, and daily attention, all while the team works to find them the right home. They’re also out in the community doing education and outreach to keep pets with families whenever possible.
On April 18, the Shelter Slumber Pawty is 24 hours living side-by-side with the animals. Sleeping there, hanging out in the kennels, and experiencing what their day-to-day is actually like. It helps get the word out about what the animals deal with in the shelter, but also has the added benefit of bringing down the stress level in there and helping the animals chill out a bit.
Part of it is to raise money. Part of it is to support the team. And part of it is to show these dogs what real snoring sounds like.
The money goes directly toward caring for these animals while they wait for their next home. Food, medical care, behavioral training - all of it.
If you’ve ever had a pet that meant a lot to you, you get it. If not, this is a pretty easy way to help create that for someone else.
If you can chip in, I’d really appreciate it.
And if not, just know there are a few dogs about to learn what undiagnosed sleep apnea sounds like.
